The name Weligama, literally means "sandy village" which refers to the area's sandy sweep bay. It is approximately 144 kilometres (89 mi) south of Colombo and is situated at an elevation of 9 metres (30 ft) above the sea level.

Weligama Beach

Weligama Beach offers beachgoers ample space to soak up the sun or frolic in the refreshing waters. A shallow bay taking the shape of a half-moon provides gentle waters which makes it safe for swimming and a great spot to learn how to surf – there are a number of local surf schools to aid you in this process too! The best time to visit and swim in Weligama Beach would be between the months of October to April, where the sea isn’t too rough and the weather is perfect.

Weligama Beach is located approximately 15 minutes away from Mirissa and 40 minutes from the historic city of Galle. The golden shores are dotted with a number of beach-side cafes and restaurant shacks along with local surf schools. Grab a refreshing king coconut and enjoy the sun, sand and sea when you’re on Weligama Beach. Most local shacks have day beds on offer for those who prefer it to the warm sands.

Surfing

This is the perfect spot in Sri Lanka for all you novice surfers to catch your first waves and learn how to surf. Advanced surfers can surf near the coral reef called Gurubebila. The best season to surf at Weligama Beach is from the end of September until the end of May. Even in the off-season, you would be able to surf on an island spot. The island just in front of Weligama is called “Taprobane”, here you can expect some beginners and even some quite advanced waves.

Whale and Dolphin watching in Mirissa

Mirissa is undeniably the best place to watch whales and dolphins while in Sri Lanka because they flock together in this area (in order to breed in these warm waters). The whale watching season starts in November and continues till April; when the ocean is calmer. Whale watching is a thrilling and exciting activity to engage in as it provides the opportunity to witness these marine creatures in their natural habitats.

Scuba Diving

Scuba diving is a type of underwater diving whereby divers use breathing equipment that is completely independent of a surface air supply. The bay of Weligama is an ideal spot for scuba diving. Visit Taprobane Island

a privately owned island with just one villa, was first built by the French Count de Mauny. He stumbled upon this utopia after a long but futile search around the world for a paradise on earth. The island then passed onto the hands of Paul Bowles; an American novelist who fell in love with the beauty of this island after a visit. After that the ownership passed onto a former United Nations Chief Prosecutor Sir Desmond Lorenz de Silva who was a Sri Lankan born, before ending up in the hands of the current owner Geoffrey Dobbs. Many authors, musicians and composers have visited this villa.
