Kaudulla National Park is a national park on the island of Sri Lanka located 197 kilometers (122 mi) away from the largest city, Colombo. It was designated a national park on April 1, 2002 becoming the 15th such area on the island. In the 2004–2005 season more than 10,000 people visited the National Park, generating an income of Rs.100,000 from entrance fees. Along with Minneriya and Girithale BirdLife International have identified Kaudulla as an Important Bird Area.

Historically Kaudulla was one of the 16 irrigation tanks built by King Mahasen. Following a period of abandonment it was reconstructed in 1959. It now attracts and supports a variety of plant and animal life, including large mammals, fish and reptiles.

Best time to visit Kaudulla National Park

The best time to visit Kaudulla is between July and December but as mentioned before, this is a year-round destination. The photos included in this article are all shot in March. The Gathering around the water reservoir takes place in the dry season from July to October.

Camping at Kaudulla National Park

Kaudulla is the tank opposite to Minneriya, relatively new and depending on the migration of the Elephants one could visit Kaudulla. You can camp during the night in Kaudulla costs about $100-300 per person depending the quality of tents hired, approx 1h30min from Dambulla, cheaper than Minneriya entry ticket, Jeep costs more if you hire from Habarana approx $35, you must spend 4-5hrs in the park to spot Elephants including herds of  Leopards (rare sight), birds, Fishing cat, Sloth Bear (rare sight), Sambar Deer, and the endangered Rusty spotted cat.

Birds Watching

160 species of bird including large water birds such as Spot-billed Pelican and Lesser Adjutant visit the Kaudulla tank. Asian Spoonbill, Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Black-headed Ibis, Painted Stork and Openbill Stork are common sights at the park. Peacock, Eagle, Giant Eagle that are hereditary to Sri Lanka are always hover over the park. One of the most spectacular sceneries in the park is hundreds of pelicans at the tank when it is about to sun set.
