Ravana Falls (popularly known as Ravana Alla, in Sinhala) is a popular sightseeing attraction in Sri Lanka. It currently ranks as one of the widest falls in the country.

This waterfall measures approximately 25 m (82 ft) in height and cascades from an oval-shaped concave rock outcrop. During the local wet season, the waterfall turns into what is said to resemble an areca flower with withering petals. But this is not the case in the dry season, where the flow of water reduces dramatically. The falls form part of the Ravana Ella Wildlife Sanctuary, and is located 6 km (3.7 mi) away from the local railway station at Ella.

Rawana Falls History

The Ravana falls have been named after the Sri Lankan king Ravana who lived over 5000 years ago. According to legend, it is said that Ravana had kidnapped princess Sita, and had hidden her in the Ravana Cave behind this waterfall At that time, the cave was surrounded with thick forest in the middle of the wilderness. The waterfall was used for her bathing purposes and is therefore an  Excavations in the cave have even revealed evidence of human habitation dating back to over 25,000 years ago.

Rawana Falls Hike

Rawana falla hike is onderful experience. Ravana Falls is a 3-tier cascading waterfall that gushes down a rock face, creating rock pools along its path.

The first set of falls is a short 1-minute walk from the jump-off point and this is the most popular spot where the majority of tourists and locals hang out.

At first sight, this set of falls didn’t look very striking in comparison to some of the waterfalls you can find in Bali and Lombok.

Ravana cave and tunnel network is a massive creation by King Ravana located in Ella Sri Lanka connected with cities / dairy farms & airports. It is proved beyond doubt of the architecture brilliance of the King Ravana.  The cave travelling from Ella on the Wellawaya road, a small sign board marks the turn off to the Sita Cave, considered to be the abode of the princess in the Ramayana.

The legend of the epic battle between Rama and Ravana goes that the Lankan King took his royal captive and fled to the Uva region from his capital of Ravana Kotte believed to be somewhere near modern day Nuwara Eliya, when Rama invaded the island along with his army. Fauna and Flora of Ravana Falls 

The mountainous regions of Ella see forests that are thick enough to form clouds of green - cloud and pygmy forests and grasslands. There are tea plantations too, on the trek from Ella to Ravana falls. The overall fauna of Sri Lanka includes 86 species of mammals, 83 species of snake, 54 species of fish and five endangered species of marine turtles. The green belts have insect and plant varieties that are a speciality of Ella. The flora consists of orchids, hardwood trees of ebony, teak and Silkwood, medicinal plants used in Ayurveda.
