According to legends, when raging waters threatened Ceylon, King Kelanitissa ordered his youngest daughter, then a princess, Vihara Maha Devi into a boat as a sacrifice. The waters were calmed and the princess miraculously survived.

Kirinda Beach is at Kirinda, a small but charming town on the south-east coast of Sri Lanka. Kirinda is a 3km long sandy beach in the south of Sri Lanka located near a fisherman village of the same name near a Buddhist stupa. Queen Viharamaha Devi and King Kavantissa, later bore two children, who then later became the great warrior kings of Sri Lanka. Many years later, during the Tsunami in 2004, the temple of Kirinda stood to be a refugee place for the Tsunami victims. The temple also gives beautiful ancient paintings dates back to 1000 years.
