A wild horse sanctuary is being considered for Delft Island in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka.

Discussions over a sanctuary on the island, a popular tourist destination, were announced by Sri Lanka Minister of Wildlife Conservation Vijith Vijayamuni Soysa following a meeting with the country’s Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Development, Douglas Devananda.

The island is home to about 450 horses, who are believed to descend from horses kept on the island from the time of Delft’s Portuguese occupation.

The flat island is surrounded by shallow waters and beaches of coral chunks and sand. During the dry season water is provided for the horses by the Navy. The island’s area is 50 km² and it is roughly oval-shaped. Its length is 8km and its maximum width about 6km.

Delft’s Tamil name is Neduntivu. It was was named after the Dutch city of Delft by Rijckloff van Goens. He named the eight most important islands in Sri Lanka after Dutch cities, but the seven others now have domestic names.

Visit Queen's Tower 

The Queen's Tower also known as Quindah Tower; is a tower that was built by the Dutch during their rule in Sri Lanka. It is located on the southeastern coast of Neduntheevu, also known as Delft Island.

It was used as a lighthouse or navigation point by the Dutch and British. A fire was lit at the bottom which created a vacuum, forcing air upwards. Its light was passed through the tower's chimney-like tube to the top where sailors would be able to see the light from a distance. Another tower known as the "King's Tower" was operated during the period of British rule on Sri Lanka, then Ceylon. Only the basement of the King's Tower survives to this day.

This is the largest island in the Palk Strait, northern Sri Lanka. The Delft Island covers 11,500 acres and is a low and arid island. Delft Island is a mostly bare island with little shade. Baobab tree, massive tree of the Adansonia Genus, native to tropical Africa and Arabia and grown in other warm regions. It is believed that the Baobab trees which had been planted by the Arab traders in some parts of Sri Lanka during the rule of the Portuguese (16th Century). Baobabs store water in the trunk to endure the harsh drought conditions. Shedding their leaves during the dry season. The tree produces large aromatic flowers up to seven inches wide. The fruit is one of the most nutrient-dense food in the world.
