Lipton’s Seat

Lipton’s Seat is perhaps the most popular attraction in Haputale. Situated an hour away from Haputale town, Lipton’s Seat is a viewpoint named after the celebrated Thomas Lipton. He was a Scottish businessman who moved to British Ceylon in 1890, where he met James Taylor and together they introduced tea gardens to the country. Prior to Lipton’s arrival, Taylor had attempted to grow coffee on the island; however, the coffee plantations were devastated by a leaf-blight. With Lipton’s help, the two men embarked on a business venture which would outlive their lifetimes.

Dambethenna Tea Factory

The Dambatenne Tea Factory was built by Thomas Lipton in 1890 when he began his tea empire, and this is the factory that manufactures his famous Lipton Ceylonta black tea. Lipton made the tea industry what it is today; with workers harvesting the tea, he sold his tea all around the world, quickly making Lipton a household name.

Majority of the tourists who visit the tea factory is mainly to witness the overall process of collecting, sieving, drying and the grading of tea. Not just that, even the equipment used in the process has been attracting the tourists year after year. You can even go and visit the Lipton’s seat which is located nearby.

Outdoor Activities In Haputale

Sunrise at Lipton's Seat

The tea plantations around Lipton's Seat are some of the most spectacular we’ve ever seen and seeing the sunrise from Lipton’s seat was a truly memorable experience. Watching the sun rise above this beautiful countryside and lush green plantations was magical, tranquil and well worth the early start we made to get there. We’d put it up there as the best thing to do in Haputale.

Walking Through the Tea fields

Haputale is famous for its tea fields and taking a walk through one is a highlight of visiting Haputale. We strongly recommend combining it with the sunrise at Liptons Seat as the walk back down through the tea plantations to the Dambatenne tea factory is stunning and probably one of the best things we did in the whole of Sri Lanka.

You don't need a guide and you will pass many friendly tea pickers heading up to work in the plantations. It was exactly the experience we were hoping for when visiting the Hill Country.

The Idalgashinna - Haputale Railway walk

If you didn’t get enough of the views on the train from Kandy, then this walk is for you. This will give you the opportunity to be like a local, walking along the train tracks and is one of those hidden gems that is off the tourist track. It’s certainly one of the more unique things you can do in Haputale.

The walk is a really nice loop starting from the Adisham Monastery, taking you through the Thangamale bird sanctuary and then follow the train tracks all the way back to Haputale.

Taking one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world

Haputale is situated mid-way on the famous Kandy to Ella Train, one that is often referred to as one of the most beautiful in the world. We highly recommend taking the train from Kandy to Haputale, and then onto Ella as the views from this train are spectacular.
