Tangalle | Sri Lanka

Tangalle (also known as Tangalla) is a large town in Hambantota District, Southern Province, Sri Lanka, governed by an Urban Council. It is one of the largest towns in southern province. Tangalla is a regionally important fishing port, situated on one of the largest bays in Sri Lanka, which is protected from the ocean by an enclosing reef. It is a centre of tourism and a popular holiday destination on the south coast. In the town centre there is an old Dutch fort which is used as a prison today.The Dutch and subsequently the British used Tangalle as an important anchorage on the southern coast of the island. The Dutch Fort, Rest House and Court House are a few remaining examples of Dutch architecture in Tangalle.

It, along with Rekawa and Ussangoda, forms an area known as “Ruk,” a coastal belt of land of outstanding beauty littered with numerous bays, coves, lagoons, rocky outcrops and sandy beaches, stretching from approximately Tangalle to Hambantota.

Turtle Watch Rekawa

The Rekawa Turtle Watch is conservation project dedicated to protecting the various endemic turtle species that nest on the warm, golden shores of Sri Lanka’s southern coast. With many turtles often found nesting in Rekawa, the conservation project protects the eggs until they are ready to be released back to the big blue. Visit the centre to learn more about their conservation efforts too.

Tangalla or Mirissa

It depends on what you want. Beachwise about similar, though at Tangalle it's a choice between either a quiet bay with some strong currents and clean beach OR a wider beach with less currents and not being so clean. As base for trips they're almost 2 hours apart and that means different flavours: Tangalle better for Yala, UW park, K'gama and Mirissa better for Galle and surroundings.
