Kumana National Park in Sri Lanka is renowned for its avifauna, particularly its large flocks of migratory waterfowl and wading birds. The Kumana National Park, also known as Yala East National Park is located in the Ampara district.The gateway to Kumana National Park is at Panama.

The park is 391 kilometres (243 mi) southeast of Colombo on Sri Lanka's southeastern coast.  Kumana is contiguous with Yala National Park. Kumana was formerly known as Yala East National Park, but changed to its present name on 5 September 2006. 

The park was closed from 1985 to March 2003 because of the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam) attacks. It was affected by the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004.

Kumana National Park

The entrance to the Park is at Panama through the Kudumbigala sanctuary and is accessible via Beragala and Koslanda or through the Uduwalawe – Tanamalvilla route.

 The Kumana Bird Sanctuary established in 1938, is part of the Kumana National Park and is one of the most important nesting and breeding grounds for birds in Sri Lanka. Of the country’s 400 bird species, the Kumana Bird Sanctuary is known to have recorded 255 species of birds

The park’s extensive bird life thrives on a massive 200 hectare natural mangrove swamp, the “Kumana Villu” and plenty of tanks and lagoons scattered around the park where thousands of birds nest and breed. It is known that thousands of birds migrate to the swamp every year between the months of April to July.
