Kataragama Temple

Kataragama is a temple complex dedicated to Buddhist guardian deity “Kataragama deviyo” and Hindu War God Kathirkamam. It is one of the few religious sites in Sri Lanka that is venerated by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and the Vedda people.

Lunugamvehera National Park

Tanamalwila based Lunugamvehera National Park is an ultimate place to visit near Kataragama in Sri Lanka. This park is easily accessible to all major places of Sri Lanka by roadways. Tourists flock here almost every day. Established in 1995, this park cum sanctuary is home to many wildlife species. Sithulpawwa Rock Temple

The sacred place of eminence, Sithulpawwa Rock Temple is a big landmark in Sri Lanka’s Tissamaharama near Kataragama. This ancient Buddhist monastery is always filled with devotees and is counted among one of the best places to visit in Kataragama, Sri Lanka. Its presence since the 2nd century has turned South-eastern Sri Lanka’s Hambantota District a popular site for religious exploration. Location of this temple at a distance of mere 18 kilometers from Katharagama pilgrimage center makes it easily accessible. Ancient King Kavantissa had built this rock temple on the hills.

Kataragama is located in the Monaragala District of Uva province, Sri Lanka. It is 228 km ESE of Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka.

Kataragama History

Kataragama has a huge history. The town was popular as a place of pilgrimage for Hindus from India and Sri Lanka by the 15th century. The popularity of the deity at the Kataragama temple was recorded by the Pali chronicles of Thailand such as Jinkalmali in the 16th century.

Kataragama Deviyo & Kataragama Perehera

Kataragama deviyo is a guardian deity of Sri Lanka. A popular deity who is considered to be very powerful, shrines dedicated to Kataragama deviyo are found in many places of the country. Kataragama god wife is “Wallli Amma”.

The Kataragama Perehera is held in the months of July/August and is a festival that coincides with the new Moon in the Esala month. This two-week Perahera attracts thousands - Hindus and Buddhists -, many of who make the pilgrimage on foot from as far afield as Jaffna in Sri Lanka's northern peninsula.
