Kalpitiya is a coastal town located in western region of, Puttalam District. The Kalpitiya peninsula consists of a total fourteen islands. It is developing as a tourist destination. Kalpitiya is located 9 m above sea level bringing a tropical climate to the city and Kalpitiya itself is consisted of 14 islands namely, Baththalangunduwa, Palliyawatta, Vellai I, Vellai II, Vellai III, Uchchamunai, Ippantivu, Periya Arichchalai, Sinna Arichchalai, Eramutivu, Sinna Eramutivu, Eramutivu West, Kakativu and Mutwal (Dutch Bay) The rainfall dramatically changes during winter and summer season in which summer season receives more rainfall than in winter.
