Just 28 km away from Arugam Bay a drive through a patch jungle path leads to the Okanda beach, where surfing and encounters with the wild elephants and leopards come hand in hand. Okanda is a point break for regular surfers. There are about three line-ups in Okanda, the last one is ideal for experienced surfers and the front two is for intermediate surfers. However the rocky cliffs standing just next to the waves could be threat to the amateur. The beaches at Okanda are also ideal for sunbathing and sunset surfing at Okanda is a life time experience. 

Okanda-Kudumbigala region is the first Heritage Conservation Zone or a sacred grove of the country, where traditional laws shall take precedence over modern laws. Sacred groves are operated under the patronage and guidance of the villagers themselves as the custodians of the living tradition.

Okanda is located at the entrance gate of Kumana National Park, 20 km south of Arugam Bay. Okanda's picturesque coastline is free of hotel buildings and tourism and traffic noise and pollution, although it’s one of the island’s most beutiful beaches. However, bathing is dangerous because of underwater currents. Okanda is a sacred site, too. In July it’s a station of Sri Lanka's most significant pilgrimage, the Pada Yatra from Jaffna to Kataragama along the East Coast. Okanda is the last stage at the coast.

Surfing in Okanda Beach

Further south Okanda is not quite as perfect for surfers, but they cover their expenses here, too. Okanda beach is not obstructed, and foreign visitors are rare, although this is one of the most beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka.

However, Normally okanda beach is less surf place, because the waves are more intense. But you can surf here on the less waves days.

Okanda Beach Surf Points

Okanda is one of Sri Lanka‘s few unspoilt beaches without hotels. It’s located just north of Kumana National Park. The sea is usually too rough for safe bathing. However, Okanda is visited by surfers from Arugam Bay, as it it is a less crowded surf point. Actually, there are three surf breaks suitable for intermediate or more advanced surfers, with with up to 8 feet waves at the main point. Be aware, there are strong rip currents that can push surfers onto the rocks. Okanda is a remote place without any life guards.

Surfing seasons in Okanda Beach

Okanda in SE is a fairly exposed point break that has unreliable waves. The surf tends to be best in the spring. Works best in offshore winds from the north northwest. Most of the surf here comes from groundswells and the best swell direction is from the southwest.
